Title: OP WANAGETHY
Post by: Pr1meIVI on November 18, 2010, 07:57:25 AM
http://opwanagethy.proboards.com/index.cgi (http://opwanagethy.proboards.com/index.cgi)

I doubt anyone besides the really old school people would recognize any of these players but this forum was before ZCT in the west in OG, one of the elite ZC channels back in the day who competed and had EvW games against BF and etc. as well as senmon/TiX.  You can even find surya before he was surya ;) but doubt anyone would know his aka before.

interesting, five years ago they were discussing 5 or 6 or even 7 nexus build. now it's all 4 nexus, sometimes 5 for pzp. anyone know how this came to be? maybe there are good reasons for it, and the old ways are inferior, but i've always done 4 nexus to copy everyone else, not because i had thought about it.

the obvious argument against more nexi is that it slows recall time. building even one additional nexus before teching can set you back such that in the early stage of the game the other side can recall while you are left to play defense with stasis (though i'm inclined to think that if done right, a viable strategy could be constructed around quickly undermining the other side's recall rather than seeking your own, at least for the very first round). the optimal balance between quicker recall time and more resource before mm is a worthwhile topic for debate that i'll leave aside for now.

what is more interesting, i think, is whether a >4 nexus build could be performed without slowing recall time, a scenario which actually was mentioned in the old thread. for example, what if 4 nexus, then starting tech (gateway, extractor, cyber), and only afterwards get additional nexi. the question becomes whether we would gain net minerals from more nexi after already having built 4 nexi and  some tech. my intuition would be no, of course not, but according to the old players, there is time to build 7 consecutive nexi before the mineral cost outweighed the mineral benefit of an additional nexus. so someone tell me, which takes more time: 7 consecutive nexi or 4 nexi + starting tech? if the former, that means more resources can be had from a >4 nexus build without any trade-off in recall time. it's a clear advantage, free resources almost. if the latter, we should consider >4 nexus build only if willing to pay a price.
